Fire Crackers

Fire Crackers

This recipe came from a boss I had many years ago. This was his Christmas coworker gift and let me tell you, they are delicious and addicting. You can adjust the heat level to match your personal preferences. My husband likes it hot. I like it mild because I can’t handle heat.

The recipe makes a TON, so feel free to cut it in half if you don’t plan to share.

Any left overs can easily be stored for a month or more, depending on the container you keep them in. Give it a try, you’ll thank me later!

A couple of tips:

  1. You may be wondering if you can use a different kind of oil. Possibly, but it will probably change the flavor since corn oil has a distinct taste from vegetable, canola or olive oil. I’ve never tried another oil, so I can’t say what it will do.
  2. Once the crackers are done shifting in the bag, I would suggest moving them to a clean ziplock or another air tight container. The seasoning mix will render the zipper on the bag unusable after a first few dips in.
  3. Yes, you really do need to gently shake and flip the bag every 10 minutes to ensure even coating and distribution before everything soaks in. Set a timer and just stay nearby for an hour.

Equipment

  • 1 2 1/2 Gallon, Hefty Jumbo Slider Bag

Ingredients

  • 1 lb Saltine Crackers (4 full sleeves)
  • 3 tbsp Ranch Dressing Seasoning Mix (1.0 oz package)
  • 2 1/4 tsp Cayenne Pepper powder
  • 2 1/4 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1 cup Corn Oil

Instructions

  • Combine dry spices in a bowl and set aside.
  • Empty 4 sleeves of saltine crackers into the jumbo slider bag. IMPORTANT: Be careful not to over stuff the bags or the seasoning won't distribute evenly. Four sleeves is the max that should go into the jumbo bag.
  • Add the dry spice mix to the bag, seal, and turn several times to mix well.
  • Drizzle 1 cup of corn oil over top over the crackers in the bag. Seal the bag and turn several times to coat crackers with oil and spices.
  • Wait 10 minutes and turn over several times to spread spices.
  • Repeat for an hour or until all oil is absorbed. The longer the crackers sit, the spicier they get!

Notes

The above will give you a very spicy cracker. If you want to adjust for spice preference, do the following:
  • Want to die spice: Use 1.5 tbsp cayenne pepper powder in place of the cayenne and chili powder combo.
  • Medium spice: Use the recipe as listed.
  • Mild spice: Use 4 tsp chili powder and 1/2 tsp Cayenne pepper
  • No spice: Use 1.5 tbsp chili powder in place of the cayenne and chili powder combo.
